Federated Insurance® Claim of the Month – Slippery Floors Can Lead to Serious Costs
Claim of the Month – September 2026
A customer entered an automotive location on a rainy day. While entryway carpets were in place, consistent foot traffic brought water inside, creating slippery tiles beyond the mat. The customer slipped and fell when they stepped off of the carpet and onto the tile, resulting in broken lower extremities that required surgery.
CLAIM AMOUNT: $200,000
Risk Management Advice to Consider:
• Preventative Measures: Put a plan in place to manage entryways during inclement weather. Use wet floor signs, fans, and additional mats in areas where water is most likely to accumulate.
• Regular Floor Inspections: Establish a routine inspection schedule for employees to monitor high-traffic areas to help spot and address hazards before they lead to accidents.
• Preserve Surveillance Video: If a slip, trip, or fall occurs, securing video footage showing other customers navigating the same area in addition to capturing the claimant’s actions from entry to exit can be helpful.
Collect Detailed Documentation: Photograph the area where any accidents happen and complete thorough incident reports with all witnesses. Accurate documentation can provide useful resources if a claim arises.
